Clearly they are doing something other than wasting time because the game hasn't finished loading. Time from clicking Launch in the Epic launcher and getting the post-"optimizing shaders" in-game splash screen was The duration of the "launching the game" splash screen went down after deleting the videos whereas CL4P-TP spent two full runs dancing on my HD compared to 1.

You could possibly be right, I certainly don't know enough about how the game was made to outright discount your assertion, but while there are some variations between running the game off of my SSD and my HD the fact that it loaded up faster from my HD than my SSD suggests that the variations aren't from loading much of anything per se.

For that matter I saw the game take about a half second longer to go from Launch to in-game splash screen after reinstalling it to my SSD and before deleting those movies. It still looks to me more like the developer thumbing their noses at people for trying to avoid annoying video files than legitimate need though. I mean there's no load bar at all until it gets to the "optimizing shaders" portion, and neither section of the startup routine has any sort of loading icon.

Also, the video files don't cover up the "Optimizing Shaders" period, so suggesting that they're there to mask that process is outright out which still leaves the question of how to get the game to stop doing stuff that it's already done and, based on other games, should have only needed to do once, the first time it was ever run. So yeah it's pretty long.

Edit: this got me thinking and I went ahead and disabled the videos and low and behold the time is identical and I just get the claptrap scrolling across the screen until the shaders start optimizing.
